Windy Wednesday

Before we set off this morning we decided to pay a visit to the butchers shop in Braunston. We have quite a bit of food in the pantry but the first bit of the Oxford Canal meanders through some beautiful countryside with very few villages. We'll be OK once we get to Banbury but that's a few days off.

Our mooring at Braunston and right on a bendy bit. The fenders weren't making much contact with the bank so we deployed a rubber tyre which we keep for emergencies such as this.

As always, once inside the butchers we discover just how much meat we didn't realise we needed. Also bought milk and porridge, just to be on the safe side. Staggered back to the boat, had a quick cup of coffee and then set off to Midland Chandlers just around the corner.

Slightly miffed as the dedicated mooring had a boat taking up all the space so we had to go past and moor at the Elsan point. Still, we needed to empty the loo and get rid of the rubbish. Got a couple of bags of coal, just in case, and then set off again.

I say that we set off, which we did, but we had to reverse back to the junction. Not far, I grant you, but narrowboats do not like going backwards. For one thing, you can't really steer in reverse. And if the wind catches you, which it did today, then it's fun all round.

But, we made it! Luckily there were no other boats coming so I was able to zigzag back until such time as I could dive off along the South Oxford. We travelled for about 2 hours and stopped just past Napton Narrowboats, near to a favourite pub of ours, The Kings Head. Coming in to tie up was tricky with a strong offshore wind. But, again, we made it!

We managed to get along to the Kings Head in the evening.

Nothing much had changed except that last time there was an 'in one door and out another' system because of post-covid precautions.

Started off with a duo of seafood for me and Parma ham bruschetta for Brigid.

This was followed by a prawn and chorizo risotto.

And to finish, chocolate bread and butter pudding and Bramley apple crème brulé. All rather yummy and it was a good job that we had a downhill walk back to Polgara.

Nice and warm on the boat but temperatures forecast to drop to 2 or 3 tonight.

I keep asking but where's summer? Perhaps tomorrow.
