Kingfisher day

Nice lazy start to the day with a breakfast of eggs & bacon on toast, whilst watching all the hire boats rushing along, returning to base before the weekend turnaround.

On the boat, it's as if nothing has changed. We still seem to be able to go to the pubs for supper, on the wide locks both crews are on opposite sides and, with us at least, boaters tend to keep their distance anyway. (maybe that's just the effect we have on other boaters)

For those of you with a canal map, at bridge 21 we saw this couple by the water's edge.

Both obviously aware of the social requirements of the day. We love this place because the characters keep changing. Sometimes an old boy with a glug of rum, other times, the couple above.

A little further on at bridge 19 there was a bird hovering mid canal. It was only when it moved off that we realised that it was a kingfisher. After that it was a case of - there it is - where? - there - are you sure? Yes, there - oh, there - no, that's a heron! And so on. Apart from that first sighting, we never really ever see the bird, just a flash of brilliant blue as it speeds off along the canal. Wonderful!

Took the following picture of the bushes and shrubs on the canalside.

It was probably 2014 when we saw the two men planting them, just small skinny bits of stick. Look at them now. Also, look carefully and you can see the new boat pole. Have applied 2 coats of Danish oil, a few more yet to go.

We arrived at the first of the Buckby locks just before lunch. Just about to stop for lunch, before taking on the flight of 7 locks, when we spotted a single boat entering the bottom lock. Full speed ahead and in we go. Lunch later, help with the locks first. A lovely couple, live aboards making their way up to Yorkshire.

This is us alongside Lazy Bee - hence the black & yellow stripes.

Fortunately for us there were quite a few boats coming down, so most of them were set in our favour and ready for use.

A look back at the way we came.

As is our custom we stopped short of the top lock and have booked a table at the New Inn for supper. They usually have a very good chicken curry but we'll have to wait and see what's on the menu.
