Malham and Mazdas

On Monday we went by bus to Malham. There was some concern as to where we picked up the bus but we soon found someone who confirmed that we were indeed waiting in the right place.

It was a splendid ride to Malham and what a wonderful village it is.

A stream runs through the middle of the village.

As we walked up the road towards Malham Cove, 2 bright red Mazda MX-5 came past us. Looking into one of the hotel car parks, what do we see but 3 more Mazdas - something odd going on here! We started chatting to one of the drivers who told us that they were all owners of the 25th Anniversary model. Each year they get together for a weekend away and this year 12 of them had stayed at Malham. We chatted on and he showed us his car and, you've guessed, we ended up trying it out.

We set off for Malham Cove, alas, on foot.

Arriving at the Cove we met up with members of the RSPB who had telescopes set up trained on some Peregrine falcons. At first we couldn't see a thing but, after being told exactly where to look, there it was, a young bird on the cliff face near its nest. One of the adults took flight and landed on a closer tree and, after quite a bit of juggling, I managed to get a picture by putting the IPad up to the telescope eyepiece.

Not up to David Attenborough standard but you can just see it in the centre of the picture.

We spent quite some time with them and then made our way to the foot of the cove.

There you could see the stream issuing from the base of the cliff.

The views around here are wonderful with dry stone walls snaking up and down the hillside.

On the return walk to the village we followed the woodside path instead of the road.

A wonderful day out and in the evening we went back to the church for bell ringing practice. After that, over to the pub for a chat and a pint.
