A black knight in Leeds

For us, we set off early on Monday to make the dash down to Leeds. Only 3 swing bridges before arriving at Newlay 3 locks. When we arrived there were 2 boats ahead of us waiting to go down. Rats! But, wait a mo! 1 boat was 62ft long and the 2nd 60ft long. The 62 footer needed to go through on its own as it could only get through diagonally - the locks are very small up here. The 60ft boat could get through with a smaller boat if we didn't mind jumping the queue. Of course I protested but not out loud, I just thought I shouldn't jump to the front - but it's amazing how those thoughts go out the window when faced with an empty lock!

This was followed by Forge 3 locks, both being operated by lock keepers.

After that a pleasant cruise through countryside, the offending (allegedly) housing estate being hidden by the trees.

All looking calm and peaceful in the sunshine.

Until you see the graffiti on the walls and over all the notice boards. Nobody to be seen actively involved, indeed, everyone on the towpath very chatty and friendly.

Our first sighting of Leeds in the distance.

And here we are moored right in the centre of the city, just above the lock that takes you through onto the River Aire.

We took a walk around town to see the sights and met up with Edward, the black prince (knight) in the centre.

This is the station which straddles the river and despite the modern facade, underneath are Victorian looking arched tunnels. All very eerie and echoey with nothing but the sound of rushing water.

Moored next to us a boat with a knitted cover! No idea what that's about - don't ask!

Later, we crossed the canal to the Pour House for a light supper. Everyone sitting outside chatting away well into the evening. Marvellous.

A last glimpse of the station.

And the lights on the bridge over the river. That's the way we're going tomorrow.
