Where are we now?

On Tuesday we made our way down to Dobcross which is not that far from Diggle, with only 8 locks in between.

And, would you believe it, another set of paddles for us to get used to. We had been told that the paddles and gates were heavy on this stretch but, after the Leeds & Liverpool, no contest! Out with the long windlass - easy peasy!

At Dobcross we topped up on water, emptied the loo and walked down to Uppermill to see what the moorings were like. We had a reasonable mooring at Dobcross and nothing was shown in the book at Uppermill so we thought a recce might be in order. In fact there were empty visitor moorings available, so back we trotted and set off through another couple of locks.

On the way we passed a walking group and were watched by gongoozlers at one of the locks. All were very interested in how the locks worked and asked about the boat.

Looking from our mooring at Uppermill.

On Wednesday the weather wasn't too good, it was overcast but not raining with a high of 17C. Instead of moving on we decided to hang around, have a fish & chips lunch at Betty's and then walk up to the church. And when I say up, I mean UP!

It was only about a mile outside the town but it was a good walk. When we got there the church was closed, with the exception of the Vestry door. So, in we went and had a good look round. Inside it resembled a Methodist church in so far as the gallery ran around both sides of the building. We had a peaceful time in there with a quiet space in our day. When we went to leave we found that the door was locked. Well, not locked as such, but when we closed the door the latch came across and the only way to get in was with a key. How we managed to get in - well, it was meant to be.

The views were stunning.

Wednesday night and the rain did rain! So, Thursday we decided to stay another day and let the clouds have a good cry.

It's a shame we're not staying in Uppermill because this coming weekend they are having a WW2 celebration with a fly past and various 1940s events. Instead, we are going to be pushing further south to try and find a bit of the sun you are having down south.
