Another day out

Monday & Tuesday.

Monday saw us travelling only 3 miles to Riley Green. We didn't want to go much further than that because the canal then approaches Blackburn and it is a good idea to travel through the town by day rather than stop overnight in the centre.

After the bustle of the locks the canal is very peaceful here.

We stopped fairly early at Riley Green, so we walked up the road to The Royal Oak.

As you can see, the outside is being painted. Once inside, the menu overwhelmed us and, naturally, we decided to stay and try it out.

Wow, what a wonderful meal. Duck parfait and spicy lamb fritters for starters, pan fried sea bass for main course.

Followed by creme brûlée.

And a most fabulous bread & butter pudding to finish. These accompanied by very nice large glasses of wine. Well, after that, you guessed it, back to the boat for a snooze!

On Tuesday we decided to take a look at Hoghton Tower. The family still live at the tower and it's the second oldest title in the country. The house is fascinating as much of it is unchanged since the 16C.

When James I visited the tower he so enjoyed a joint of beef that he knighted it on the spot as 'Sir Loin.' And the name remains to this day.

The entrance to the grand hall where scenes from the recent TV series of Henry VIII were filmed. We spent several hours there, had a modest lunch in the cafeteria and returned to the boat after a very enjoyable day out.
