Day 5 – Sunday 2nd September. Wow! Today we have broken all records and travelled just three miles from Shardlow to Weston upon Trent. A day for cleaning the windows, polishing up the brass, helping hire boat skippers moor their craft and time for fishing. Fishing, I hear you say. I didn’t know that Laurie fished. Well I don’t, not really but I have this very powerful sea-searcher magnet which I throw into the canal now and again. The other day we lost our windlass in a lock so I threw in the magnet and out came a windlass – not our one but a windlass all the same. Well, today I thought I would try my luck again. The result: 1 barbecue grill past its sell-by date; 1 aerial (also out of date); 1 large washer; and several nails and rusty bits. Oh well, could have been worse – but you should have seen the one that got away! Also another first, no pubs today. But we are near The Coopers Arms but that’s about eight minutes’ walk away and it has been a tiring day with all this fresh air and sun. Looking on the good side, we had the best roast chicken for a long time – supplied by the butcher in Barrow upon Soar. Yummee!
