Not a very early start this morning. Had a leisurely breakfast of eggs and bacon and then walked the loo and rubbish round to the disposal point only to find that the elsan was out of order (bunged up). At least we got rid of the rubbish.
Back to the boat just as it started to rain. Time for a cuppa but then we decided to set off. Seemed quite strange putting on wet weather gear again.
Unfortunately, we set off in the middle of a procession of hireboats. They were managing quite well but it became obvious that they didn't have full control of their boats. It all takes time.
At the swingbridge at Stretton Stop, the boat ahead of us stopped, quite rightly, to let an approaching boat through. What no one realised was that that boat was stopping to take on water. I told the hireboat to go on through but they had run aground! So I eased the boat past them, told them what to do with the tiller and engine and drew their bow out from the bank so that they could follow us through.
Well that went OK until the next corner. Granted there were moored boats one side and an approaching boat the other but, somehow, they ended up broadside across the canal.
But, and you will have worked this out for yourselves, we were now in front of them and didn't have to wait around while they sorted themselves out.
The weather cheered up considerably and here we are going through Newbold Tunnel. The captain is steering with me trying to give helpful advice because tunnels, even short ones, are tricky to negotiate.
We got through in fine style and stopped at the far end of Newbold to pop along to the Co-op for supplies and to have a late fish and chips lunch. Delicious!
Then off again, heading to Hillmorton. And a picture of a pastoral scene to round off your Saturday.
