The tortoise and the hare

4 miles and 7 locks in 3 1/2 hours. Now that's moving for you! Talk about high speed and HS2. That's got nothing on us.

When we set off this morning the sky was overcast with a strong wind blowing across the cut. Luckily it was a warm wind which makes all the difference.

We got stuck into the locks fairly early on, one of the pounds being very low, someone having left the top gates open and with leaky bottom gates the water just disappears.

It was low enough in this section that I almost had to pole the boat along. Luckily we managed to keep going.

And then it rained. Or should I say, and then it poured. Our shoes and coats proved not to be as waterproof as we thought. We were going to stop at one point but we saw another boat - yes, another boat - coming out of the next lock so we carried on. And then a couple of C&RT people came along wanting to let some water down to fill up the empty pound, so we kept moving to get out of their way as well.

Eventually we found a safe place to stop, all the other ones being full of boats that obviously had more sense than us.

But, after the rain…
