One Mining Town too many

Saturday 6th. We've been driving around a bit today. Firstly we set off to visit our nearest village, Poolburn. There is a Poolburn reservoir, a Poolburn Hotel (now closed!) so there has to be a Poolburn village. Well, we missed it! Even when we turned round and went back again we weren't too sure where it was. So we carried on cross country to Clyde, another old mining town. The main difference with this town is that it had a railway (now closed!).

As usual we had a good walk round, visited the old railway station, looked at the museum (closed until 2pm).

And, of course, had a tea and a coffee.

Some of the properties in Clyde.

We then drove alongside Lake Dunstan to Tarras. And missed that as well! Well, not exactly, we passed a garage and a couple of buildings, not realising that that was all there was of Tarras! This time we turned around and stopped. Glad we did because there was a nice Merino wool shop (totally out of our price range - £70 for a hat and scarf! But next to that was a splendid cafe where I had an all day breakfast.

We then drove back along the other side of the lake and bought a small box of mixed fruits, freshly picked. Cherries, greengages, nectarines, apricots. Lovely. We could have stopped in Cromwell but we felt that we had had enough of old mining towns, so we went through and on to Banockburn where we stopped for an hour or two at the lakeside watching people water skiing and generally messing about on the water.

After a restful afternoon we returned to Lauder in time to meet Gilly at a local ukulele weekend event. Everyone there had a great time showing off their various skills. It was a great evening sitting outside listening to folk enjoying themselves.

Mind you, the wind turned a little chilly as evening came on. Sunday tomorrow and after that we move up country again.
