Down on the Farm

Wednesday 3rd. I'm starting off with the date from now on since I don't know when I will be able to pick up the Internet again. Where we are they only have dial up and, although we can check emails, we can't write up the blog.

So, today we drove back across country through some awesome countryside. The mountains are so far away from you yet somehow seem so near. We drove alongside the Eyre Mountains and up the side of Lake Wakatipu the longest fresh water lake in New Zealand

We drove through Queenstown and made a detour to Bob's Cove where we had a picnic lunch under the trees by the lake.

The temperature has gradually been climbing all day and reached 35 degrees during the afternoon. Luckily the car has air conditioning, otherwise it would have been 'frying tonight'.

On our way to Cromwell we came through Karawau Gorge where we saw the Roaring Meg Power Station. Apparently the river is called Roaring Meg after a dancing girl who, whilst being carried over the river by a miner, made quite a fuss. The second girl with them was not so noisy so, the next river they came to they called Gentle Annie.

The road then led us on through Clyde and Alexandra on to Omakau. Here we made a right turn, crossed the Raggedy Range and then dived off onto the plains of Rohan. (Another Lord of the Rings film location). After driving for miles we ended up at Moa Creek on a farm in the middle of nowhere.

We were greeted by a sheep and a Dalmatian. Two horses wandered round to check us out after which we met Gilly, our host.

It's been a very hot day, we're very tired and will probably turn in early after supper.
